Lawmakers consider bill to legalize marijuana in Oregon
Lawmakers in Oregon are considering a bill to legalize cannabis. A public hearing as been scheduled for House Bill 3371 for April 2nd. The bill proposes giving the Oregon Liquor Control Commission the power to regulate the production, possession and sale of cannabis. There would be a $35 tax on every ounce sold by businesses serving as cannabis producers. The money would be placed into a cannabis tax account. At the end of the month the OLCC would distribute the money with 40% going to school,20% going to the Oregon State Police, 20% for mental health, alcoholism and drug services while the last 20% would go to the governments general fund. Under HB 3371 it would be illegal for anyone under 21 to possess, manufacture or deliver cannabis. Supporters said legalized cannabis would generate millions for the state in new taxes while cutting down on criminal activity. Opponents questioned whether the measure would increase drug use and crime.
