Marijuana legalization bill to be introduced in Missouri

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON - DECEMBER 6: A Seattle resident takes marijuana from a plastic bag shortly after a law legalizing the recreational use of marijuana took effect on December 6, 2012 in Seattle, Washington.

In the next Missouri legislative session starting in January of 2014 Rep. Rory Ellinger plans to introduce legislation to legalize pot in the state. Though he plans to model the bill after the successful decriminalization in Colorado, he is realistic about its success.

Rep. Ellinger said in an interview with the Riverfront Times in St. Louis:
"I expect there will be a lot of good people that feel marijuana is wrong, that it leads down a path of worse drugs and trouble and so on. I respect their opinion, but I think that it can all be disputed. I don't know anyone who has ever died of a marijuana overdose."
While this initial attempt may not have much hope in passing, it is still an important milestone. This is the first time a legislator in Missouri has proposed such action. Once the bill is penned and introduced next session the local news stations will have no choice but to cover the debate forcing a much needed and long overdue dialogue on the true dangers of marijuana, or rather, lack thereof.
